FAP – First Aid For Aquatic Injuries

This course focuses on issues we can encounter as aquatic sports enthusiasts and beach roamers. We often find ourselves in more remote areas and take part in more risky activities than sitting at home watching TV, which is why it is good to be acquainted with taking emergency action and first aid procedures. Besides lacerations, fractures and sprains this course also contains instructions for taking action in diving emergencies, injuries incurred from contact with marine flora and fauna, ingesting toxins, burns, drownings and asphyxiations, etc.

 

Theoretical knowledge:

  • Introduction to first aid
  • Changing pressure related injuries, braotrauma
  • Secondary effects of pressure: Decompression sickness, toxic breathing gases
  • Near-drowning, drowning, salt water aspiration syndrome and heart attack
  • Seasickness, hypothermia, heat exhaustion and heat stroke
  • Personal injury: Bumps and bruises; bleeding injuries; fractures, sprains and strains
  • Stings, burns and bites of toxic marine animals; ingested toxins, insect stings
  • Assembling a complete first aid kit
  • Record-keeping

 

Practical exercises:

  • Different mock scenarios of accidents and injuries
  • Approach and treatment of injuries
  • Ensuring the scene of the accident and victim safety

 

Course duration:

2 days

  • Theory: 6-8 hours
  • Exercises: 4-5 hours

 

Candidate prerequisites:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age

Recommended is knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, e.g. a certificate from an ANDI CPR course or equivalent. Recommended is knowledge of first aid, e.g. a certificate from an ANDI First Aid for Aquatic Injuries course or equivalent. The ANDI Oxygen Administration for Diving Emergencies course is one of the prerequisites for enrolment in professional training for the Divemaster and Instructor certificates. Enrolment is only accepted after prepayment/deposit. In the case of unauthorized absence from the course, there is no return of the deposit.
